Initial information indicated that 13 children had died, while rescue work continued overnight and officials worked to establish the full scale of the tragedy.

The accident occurred in the Raghopur police station area, near Rampur Shyamchand in the Raghopur Diara region. A small boat carrying children reportedly lost balance and overturned in the river. The children had been travelling in connection with a feast, and the incident took place during the return journey, officials and local representatives said.

Financial aid announced by Centre and Bihar government

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of life and announced ex-gratia assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. Families of every person killed will receive Rs. 2 lakh, while each injured person will be provided Rs. 50,000.

“The loss of lives in the boat capsizing incident in Vaishali, Bihar, is deeply painful. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this difficult time. I pray for the speedy recovery of all those injured. The local administration is assisting those affected,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister also said that the local administration was extending support to those affected. The relief amount announced through the PMNRF is intended for the next of kin of each victim who died in the incident.

The Bihar government separately announced compensation of Rs. 4 lakh for the family of each deceased victim. With the central and state announcements combined, a bereaved family may receive total financial assistance of Rs. 6 lakh, subject to the applicable government procedures for distributing relief.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary directed the administration to accelerate rescue and relief measures. He also asked officials to ensure that injured people receive appropriate medical treatment.

Different casualty figures emerge during operation

RJD leader and Raghopur MLA Tejashwi Yadav described the accident as deeply distressing and said he had spoken with the district administration and the Disaster Management Department. He urged authorities to deploy the maximum possible number of rescue teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force.

Yadav said that 14 bodies had been recovered at the point when he shared an update. He also said six people had been referred for hospital treatment and three others were safe. His account reflected the evolving nature of the night-time rescue operation, while the initial confirmed death count cited in the incident stood at 13 children.

“Extremely tragic news has arrived from my constituency, Raghopur,” Yadav said, adding that the boat had overturned as children returned after attending a feast in the Raghopur Diara area.

He said the possible death toll could be far higher, estimating that it might reach around 30, with children making up most of the victims. That figure remained an estimate while search teams continued their work and authorities sought to verify how many people had been on the boat.

Yadav said he would travel to Raghopur after reaching Patna. He also stated that party workers had been sent to the site to assess the situation and help affected families during the emergency.

Small vessel, large consequences

Early details suggested that around 15 to 20 children were travelling on the small boat. The vessel became unstable in the Ganga and overturned, throwing those aboard into the river. Local residents joined the administration after news of the accident spread, assisting the effort to locate people in the water and recover victims.

River travel can be essential for communities in diara areas, where settlements and agricultural land are shaped by changing river channels and seasonal conditions. But emergencies on small boats can quickly become severe, particularly after dark, when visibility and access to immediate help may be limited.

The central concern for authorities remained the rescue operation, medical care for survivors and support for families who had lost children. The discrepancy between the initial death count and the number of bodies later mentioned by Yadav underscored that the situation was still being assessed as operations continued.

For the families in Rampur Shyamchand and surrounding parts of Raghopur, the accident has turned what was meant to be a journey connected to a community meal into an overwhelming loss. Condolences have been expressed by political leaders, while government agencies have been asked to provide relief, treatment and all possible assistance to those affected.
