Delhi Traders Seek Postponement of Rahul Gandhi’s Ramlila Maidan Rally Until After Bhai Dooj

Indianewslive247.com – क र ब र य क र - Delhi’s business community has urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to defer the proposed November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan, arguing that a major political gathering during the festive shopping period could disrupt one of the busiest trading stretches of the year.

The Chamber of Trade & Industry (CTI) has asked that the event be held after November 10, following Bhai Dooj. The organisation said markets across the capital are already handling heavy customer footfall, increased stock movement and festival-related deliveries ahead of Dhanteras, Diwali and Bhai Dooj.

For traders, the concern is not limited to the rally venue itself. Ramlila Maidan sits close to several important wholesale and retail hubs, and any extensive traffic restrictions, diversions or barricading could affect the movement of both shoppers and goods across central and old Delhi.

Festival demand puts markets under pressure

The Diwali period is a crucial sales window for a wide range of businesses. Demand typically rises for gold and silver, utensils, electronic goods, clothing, dry fruits, sweets and other festival purchases. At the same time, wholesalers and retailers need regular access for incoming consignments, local deliveries and customer visits.

CTI said that restrictions during this period could create difficulties for people travelling to markets as well as traders transporting merchandise. In congested commercial areas, even short-term road closures can slow supply movement and make it harder for customers to reach shops.

The body noted that Delhi has witnessed business interruptions in the past when rallies, marches and road blockages affected movement in key parts of the city. It warned that similar disruption during the festival season could have a larger commercial impact because markets are operating at peak capacity.

Central Delhi markets could be affected

In its letter, CTI highlighted that numerous historic trading centres lie within roughly five kilometres of Ramlila Maidan. These include Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Chawri Bazar, Bhagirath Palace, Khari Baoli, Kashmiri Gate, Naya Bazar, Mori Gate, Kinari Bazar, Dariba, Daryaganj, Ajmeri Gate, Jama Masjid, Jhandewalan, Karol Bagh, Nabi Karim, Azad Market and Lajpat Rai Market.

These markets serve not only Delhi shoppers but also buyers and businesses from other parts of India. Wholesale trade from these locations supplies merchandise to a broader network of retailers, making smooth access especially important during the pre-Diwali rush.

“Within a five-kilometre radius of Ramlila Maidan are some of Delhi’s most historic and well-known wholesale and retail markets. Goods from these markets are sent across India. Traffic diversions, metro station closures and barricading because of the rally could bring their work to a complete halt.”

The traders’ group has also expressed concern about access to Old Delhi and New Delhi railway stations. These stations are major arrival and departure points for traders, workers, customers and consignments connected with the city’s commercial districts. Any disruption around the rally could make travel more difficult during a period when demand is already high.

CTI cites estimated October losses

The letter also referred to the financial impact that traders say they have already faced in October. CTI estimated that repeated rallies, marches and road closures around Connaught Place, India Gate and central Delhi had caused losses of about Rs 3,000 crore for Delhi’s traders.

“Because of continuing rallies, marches and road closures in Connaught Place, India Gate and central Delhi, Delhi traders have already suffered losses of nearly Rs 3,000 crore in CTI’s assessment. Supplies from outside stopped reaching wholesale markets, while customers were unable to reach retail outlets.”

The estimate reflects the organisation’s assessment of the effect of restricted mobility on trade. For wholesale markets, delayed or halted supplies can affect stock availability at the exact time businesses are preparing for festive demand. For retail stores, lower customer access can directly affect daily sales during a limited but important seasonal period.

Festival shopping in Delhi is often concentrated in established market clusters, where customers may visit several shops in a single trip. Traders fear that uncertainty around road access, parking, public transport or crowd-control arrangements may discourage those visits. They have therefore requested that the rally be scheduled after the major festival period has passed.

Appeal focuses on timing rather than opposition to the event

CTI’s appeal is centred on the proposed date of the rally and the potential consequences for commerce during the Diwali season. The organisation has asked Rahul Gandhi to consider the interests of traders, customers and the wider festival economy by moving the event beyond November 10.

The request underlines the close link between public events, traffic management and commercial activity in central Delhi. Ramlila Maidan is a prominent public venue, but its location also places it near markets that depend on steady movement through already crowded streets.

With Dhanteras, Diwali and Bhai Dooj expected to draw large numbers of shoppers, traders are seeking a schedule that allows businesses to operate without added transport disruption. Their message is that the festive period offers a narrow and valuable opportunity for sales, and that preserving access to the city’s markets should remain a priority until the rush is over.
